A kitchen splashback is a relatively small surface, but it sits directly at eye level and can make the whole room look carefully finished or slightly off. The best splashback tile layout examples do more than show attractive tiles. They show how tile size, starting point, grout lines, cuts and edges work together around sockets, cabinets and worktops.
For most kitchens, the layout should be decided before tiles are ordered. A tile that looks good in a showroom can create awkward slivers at the end of a run, an unbalanced line above the hob or too many cuts around electrical points once it reaches the wall. A proper setting-out plan avoids those problems and gives the finished surface a more deliberate appearance.
Start with the wall, not the pattern
Before choosing a layout, look at the full splashback area. Measure the distance between the worktop and wall units, the width of each run, where the hob sits and the position of every socket, switch and extractor. In older London properties especially, walls and cabinets are not always perfectly level or square. The tile layout needs to account for this rather than exposing it.
A tiler will normally establish a level datum line and assess where full tiles can be placed. In many cases, keeping full tiles most visible around the hob or centre of the main wall is better than starting from one corner. The smaller cuts can then fall at less noticeable ends, beneath wall units or against a return wall.
Tile size matters here. Large-format tiles create fewer grout joints and can give a clean, contemporary finish, but they demand flatter walls and more careful handling around sockets. Smaller tiles are more forgiving on uneven areas and work well on short runs, although there will be more grout to maintain.

Brick bond for a familiar, balanced finish
Brick bond, also called running bond, uses rectangular tiles with each row offset from the one below. It is one of the most reliable layouts for metro tiles, handmade-effect ceramics and simple matt finishes. The staggered joints add movement without making the kitchen feel busy.
A half-tile offset is the classic option. It suits traditional kitchens, shaker doors and many modern schemes because it is easy to read from a distance. For a less predictable look, a third-offset bond can work with longer rectangular tiles, but the layout must be set out accurately. Random-looking offsets should still follow a controlled pattern, otherwise the joints can look accidental.
Brick bond is practical around sockets because the joints do not form continuous vertical lines across the wall. However, careful planning is still needed to avoid a socket faceplate cutting through a narrow tile edge. Matching grout keeps the finish calm, while a contrasting grout makes the pattern much more visible.
Straight stack for clean lines
A straight stack layout places tiles directly above one another, creating uninterrupted vertical and horizontal grout lines. It is neat, architectural and particularly effective in kitchens with flat-fronted cabinets, slim worktops and minimal detailing.
This layout does not hide inaccuracies. If the first row is not level, every line above it will show the problem. It also needs consistent tile sizing and joint spacing. For that reason, straight stack is often best with quality porcelain or machine-made ceramic tiles rather than heavily varied handmade tiles.
Vertical stack is a useful variation for narrow kitchens or low splashback areas. Running rectangular tiles upright can make the wall appear taller, particularly between a worktop and wall units. It works well with slim kit-kat tiles too, although the number of grout joints means grout colour and cleaning should be considered from the start.
Herringbone where the wall needs more character
Herringbone uses rectangular tiles set at right angles to create a zig-zag pattern. It has more visual impact than brick bond and suits a feature area behind a hob, a single return wall or a kitchen with otherwise plain cabinetry. It can look excellent with natural stone, marble-effect porcelain and glazed ceramic tiles.
The trade-off is cutting. A herringbone splashback generally needs more cuts at the perimeter, around sockets and at the underside of cabinets. That adds labour and can increase waste, especially where several separate splashback runs are involved. It is not a reason to avoid the pattern, but it should be allowed for in the budget.
The pattern should normally be centred on the focal point. Behind a hob, this may mean placing the centre of a V or a tile point on the hob centreline. Starting herringbone at one end of the wall can leave the feature looking lopsided, even if every tile is technically straight.
Chevron for a sharper, more formal pattern
Chevron is often confused with herringbone, but the tile ends meet to form a continuous V shape. The effect is more structured and directional. It works best when the tile is specifically made for chevron installation, as standard rectangular tiles will not produce the same clean point.
This is a strong choice for a wide, uninterrupted wall. On a very small splashback with several sockets, chevron can lose its impact because the pattern is broken too often. If the kitchen has a large range cooker or a broad clear section above the worktop, it can become a precise feature without needing a bold colour.
Large-format tiles for fewer joints
Large porcelain or ceramic tiles can create a calm, almost continuous splashback. A single slab-style tile behind the hob, or two large tiles across a run, can suit contemporary kitchens and is easier to wipe down than a heavily jointed layout.
The wall condition is critical. Large tiles need a well-prepared, flat background and the correct adhesive coverage. Their size also makes cuts around sockets more conspicuous. Where possible, it is worth adjusting the setting out so socket covers sit comfortably within a tile rather than leaving narrow strips around the opening.
A marble-effect porcelain in large format can give the appearance of stone without the same sealing requirements. The vein direction should be planned before fixing. Matching the flow across adjacent tiles can make a noticeable difference to the final finish.
Feature panel behind the hob
Not every splashback needs the same tile treatment across every wall. A practical approach is to use a simple field tile on the main runs and introduce a patterned, mosaic or natural stone panel behind the hob. This creates a focal point while keeping cleaning and installation costs sensible elsewhere.
The panel needs a defined border. It may align with the hob width, the extractor width or a cabinet line, depending on the kitchen. Avoid making it only slightly wider than the hob without a clear reason, as it can look like an afterthought. A framed border tile can work, but a clean change in tile layout is often enough.
Grout, trim and edges change the result
Grout is part of the design, not a final afterthought. A grout close to the tile colour gives a quieter surface and is useful with herringbone, mosaics or tiles with texture. A contrasting grout highlights the geometry and can suit a simple white tile in brick bond or stack bond.
Very light grout can look fresh but may need more regular cleaning near the hob. Dark grout is more forgiving of cooking marks, though it will show limescale if the area is frequently wiped with hard water. A quality grout and neat joint spacing are more valuable than choosing a fashionable colour that does not suit the room.
Finish the exposed edges properly. Where the tile ends at an open wall, a metal trim, tile edging piece or carefully mitred return provides a clean line. The best option depends on the tile thickness and kitchen style. Chrome or brushed brass trim can tie in with taps and handles, while colour-matched edging is less noticeable.
Avoid the common layout mistakes
The most frequent problem is starting with a full tile in a corner without checking what happens at the other end. This often produces a thin cut beside a cabinet or next to the hob. Small cuts are difficult to install neatly and draw attention once grouted.
Another issue is tiling around sockets without considering their final position. Electrical faceplates should sit flat and securely over the tile finish, with appropriate adjustment by a qualified electrician where required. Do not simply tile up to old faceplates and hope the covers will hide uneven cuts.
Finally, do not rely on silicone to correct gaps caused by poor setting out. A neat silicone joint at the worktop is essential for sealing, but it should be a consistent finishing joint, not a solution for irregular tile cuts.
