How to Waterproof Shower Tiling Properly

A shower can look perfectly tiled and still leak behind the wall. Grout, tile adhesive and ceramic tiles are not a waterproof system on their own. Knowing how to waterproof shower tiling means protecting the structure behind the finish, particularly around the shower valve, corners, niches and tray junction.

For a reliable result, waterproofing must be planned before the first tile is fixed. The correct system depends on the wall construction, shower type and the condition of the existing bathroom, but the principle stays the same: create a continuous waterproof barrier directly behind the tiles.

Why shower tiles need waterproofing behind them

Tiles are water-resistant, not fully waterproof. Small amounts of water and moisture can pass through grout joints, around silicone seals and through minor cracks over time. In a low-splash area this may not cause an immediate problem. Inside a shower enclosure or over a bath with a shower, repeated exposure can lead to damp plasterboard, swollen timber, loose tiles, staining on adjacent walls and leaks into the room below.

Grout is there to fill and finish joints. Silicone seals movement gaps. Neither replaces a proper waterproofing layer. The layer that does this job is commonly called a tanking system. It may be a liquid membrane, a sheet membrane or a waterproof tile backer board system with sealed joints.

This is especially relevant in London properties where bathrooms are often fitted over timber floors, within converted lofts or above finished living spaces. A slow leak can remain hidden until significant repair work is needed.

Start with a sound shower substrate

Waterproofing will only perform as well as the surface beneath it. Walls must be stable, clean, dry and free from loose paint, wallpaper paste, dust or failing adhesive. The surface also needs to be flat enough for tiles to sit evenly without excessive adhesive build-up.

Standard plasterboard should not be used as the backing within a shower's wet zone. Moisture-resistant plasterboard is better suited to general bathroom walls, but it is still not a complete waterproof solution where the shower receives direct water. Cement-based tile backer boards, foam-core waterproof boards and suitable render systems are more dependable choices when installed correctly.

On solid masonry walls, sound cement render can provide a suitable base. Check for cracks, salt contamination and damp before proceeding. On timber stud walls, ensure the framing is rigid and the boards are fixed at the correct centres. Any movement behind the tiles can crack grout, break seals and compromise the waterproofing layer.

Floors need the same attention. A shower room floor must be firm, level or correctly formed to falls, and appropriate for the chosen membrane and tile adhesive. If a wet-room shower area is being created, falls towards the drain should be formed before waterproofing, not improvised with tile adhesive during fixing.

How to waterproof shower tiling with a tanking system

Most residential showers are waterproofed with a compatible tanking kit. Using a complete system from one manufacturer is usually the safest approach because the primer, membrane, tape, corners and sealant are designed to work together. Mixing products can create uncertainty over adhesion and warranty requirements.

Prime the surface where required

Some porous boards and cementitious backgrounds need priming before a liquid membrane is applied. Others do not. Follow the technical instructions for the system rather than applying a general-purpose primer by habit. The wrong primer can prevent the membrane bonding properly.

The substrate should be dust-free and dry. Do not attempt to tank over a damp wall in the hope that the membrane will solve an existing moisture problem. First identify whether the issue is plumbing, external penetration, condensation or rising damp.

Seal corners, board joints and changes of direction

The vulnerable points in a shower are rarely the middle of a wall. They are the internal corners, wall-to-floor junctions, board joints, pipe penetrations, niches and the connection between the shower tray and wall.

Apply waterproof tape to these areas while the first coat of liquid membrane is still wet, or use the specified adhesive where working with sheet membranes. Pre-formed internal and external corners produce a neater, more dependable detail than cutting and overlapping tape in tight areas.

At pipe outlets, fit purpose-made sealing collars around shower valves, riser rails and body jets. A neat tile cut around a pipe is not enough to prevent water finding its way into the wall cavity.

Apply the membrane continuously

Liquid membranes are normally applied in two coats, with the second coat laid in the opposite direction to help achieve full coverage. Respect the stated drying time between coats. Rushing this stage can trap moisture or leave weak spots where the coating is too thin.

The membrane should cover the full shower area, not just a narrow strip behind the mixer valve. In a shower enclosure, tank the walls receiving direct spray from tray level to above the shower head. Extending the waterproofing beyond the enclosure is sensible where a fixed glass panel leaves nearby walls exposed.

For a wet room, the floor and lower wall sections need a continuous waterproof treatment, including the drain detail. This is technical work. The membrane must connect correctly to the drain flange so water cannot pass beneath the tiled floor.

Treat shower trays and baths as movement junctions

A shower tray or bath will move slightly in use, even when it feels solid. This is why the wall-to-tray junction needs a flexible detail, not rigid grout. Depending on the tanking system, waterproof tape or a sealing band is bonded across the junction before tiling.

Once the tiles are fixed and grouted, leave a clean perimeter gap and fill it with sanitary silicone. Do not grout this joint. Silicone may need replacing over the years, but it is far easier to renew a surface seal than repair water-damaged walls.

Choose adhesive, grout and tiles for a wet area

Once tanking has cured, use a flexible cement-based tile adhesive rated for wet areas. Ready-mixed adhesive should not be used for most shower wall installations because it dries slowly behind non-porous tiles and may re-emulsify with prolonged moisture exposure.

Porcelain tiles are a strong choice for showers due to their very low water absorption. Ceramic wall tiles can also work well, provided the substrate and waterproofing are correct. Natural stone needs more consideration. Some stone is porous, may require sealing, and can be affected by moisture, cleaning products or mineral content in the water.

Use a grout appropriate for the joint width and tile type. Cement-based flexible grout is common and gives a practical finish, while epoxy grout offers greater stain and water resistance but is more demanding to apply and clean. Epoxy can be worthwhile in heavily used shower rooms, but it does not remove the need for tanking or silicone movement joints.

Tile fixing details that prevent future problems

Use the right trowel size and aim for good adhesive coverage, particularly with large-format porcelain. Hollow areas behind tiles can make them more vulnerable to impact and can hold water if a joint fails. Back-buttering large tiles can improve contact where needed.

Keep tile cuts tidy around controls and pipework, but do not pack the gaps tightly with grout. Leave room for flexible sealant at changes of plane and around fittings where movement or vibration is possible. A tiled niche should be tanked on every internal face and formed with a slight fall on the base so water drains out rather than sitting against the rear wall.

If the shower includes a recessed shelf, bench or window reveal, treat it as a wet horizontal surface. These details look excellent when done well, but they need correct falls and carefully sealed corners.

Allow proper drying and test before regular use

Every product in the build-up has its own curing time. Membrane coats must dry before tiling. Adhesive must cure before grouting. Grout must cure before silicone is applied where specified, and silicone needs time before the shower is used. Heating the room excessively or using the shower too early can affect the finish.

Before fitting furniture or closing access panels, inspect the work carefully. Check that all pipe collars are sealed, tray edges are continuous and no membrane has been damaged during tiling. In wet rooms, a controlled flood test may be appropriate before the final finish is completed, but it should only be carried out where the floor construction and drainage arrangement permit it.

When professional installation is the sensible choice

A straightforward shower wall can be manageable for an experienced DIYer using one complete waterproofing system. A wet room, timber floor, large-format porcelain installation, stone finish or shower with several niches needs more planning. The cost of specialist installation is often small compared with repairing a concealed leak later.
